PANCHAKARMA

Ayurveda categorized the basic treatment into three as samsodhana(elimination procedure) samsamana(palliative procedure) and Nidana parivarjana(preventive measures) the samsodhana, purifying procedures are collectively called as Panchakarma - the five medical procedures. It is the comprehensive method of treatment advocated for the radical elimination of disease causing factors (doshas) of the body according to ayurvedic principles.

The five fold measures used for the purpose of sodhana (Chakra) are:

  1. Vamana(emesis)
  2. Virechana(purgation)
  3. Anuvasana(oil enema)
  4. Asthapana(decoction enema) and
  5. Nasya(nasal insufflation)

There are certain preparatory procedures(purva karma) also being carried out prior to the Panchakarma therapy to get the maximum effect of the treatment they are snehana(oleation) and swedana(sudation)

Panchakarma is a synonym for samsodhana.
